INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT COURSE (IDC)

By participating in the IDC you prepare yourself for the instructor examination, IE, and a career as a professional PADI-instructor.
The IDC program normally takes eight days. Then follows the instructor examination that takes two days. Teaching is done in English, but some of the dive centers in Puerto Galera offers a multi-lingual service dive instructors.

IDC - Academics
Through the IDC you get a close look at what's ahead of you in terms effective teaching techniques. Here you acquire knowledge that will help you in every teaching and presentation situation, far beyond dive-instructions! "Tell them what you are going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them!"

You will get many opportunities to practice. You practice in small groups, you test and make mistakes and you learn a lot from one day to the other. It takes a lot of effort, but everyone finds this to be among the most instructive course they have attended!

To teach people how to dive is a demanding job! You have to motivate, correct, organize and always be in control over the students and yourself. All this you will learn during the lectures that continue every day through the whole IDC. You will also get a thorough understanding of PADI's teaching system, from PADI Open Water to PADI Divemaster.

You learned dive planning during your Divemaster course, now you will learn how to give your students a professional dive-briefing before the pool exercises and ocean dives and a de-briefing after each dive! You will learn how to prepare a dive-briefing and how to use it and you will have plenty of time to practice.

IDC - The Pool Sessions - Confined
The pool training is an important part of the PADI Open Water course and much emphasis is put on it during the IDC.

You will learn how to motivate and help Open Water students to master all the exercises needed before you take them diving in the ocean. We practice and drill techniques for several days. If you feel uncertain about anything, you will get almost unlimited time to practice.

Through practice, testing and trying you will get a good base to stand on and a level of confidence that is invaluable for your future as a dive-instructor. You will get advice and hints, and you are allowed to make mistakes without feeling embarrassed. Instead you will get smiles and encouragement: Positive motivation, is our motto!

IDC - Open Water Sessions
Most of the time will be spent on practice performing ocean dives with PADI Open Water students with a lot of emphasis on how to organize dives, and, of course, how to have full control over your students at all cost!

After a couple of days at sea you're getting closer to the examination. The atmosphere is on top, even though you feel a little shaky this close to examination. Everyone is excited about the examination party just a few days away!

IE - Instructor Exam
The examination takes two days. It begins with an hour of information presented by PADI's own examiner. Even though your nerves are highly-strung you can feel that you're going to do OK.

During a two hour exam you get to show off the theoretical knowledge you acquired during your Divemaster course. You pick the right answer from a, b, c or d - like the other PADI exams you took before. There are five main topics from which you get questions:

  • Physics
  • Physiology
  • Dive planning
  • General knowledge and environment
  • RDP (the table and the wheel)

You will also take a two hour exam on the PADI teaching system, standards and procedure. Here you can use the instructor manual and other help.

You will also have to show your teaching skills in the pool, the ocean and the class-room. Everything goes according to plan and before you know what happened you are congratulated and can call yourself PADI INSTRUCTOR!
